What to Look For in Senior Housing for Your Loved One

Blog

If you are starting to think that it might be time to move your aging loved one into a senior housing facility, you will want to make sure that you are getting them into the best place possible in your area. This can be a little intimidating, especially if you have never really had to research senior housing. You might feel as though you do not know what it is that you should be looking for. To help you with this, here are some of the things that you will want to look for.

The Cleanliness

One of the first things you will want to observe during your tour of the housing facility is the level of cleanliness. It should be near perfect. After all, you do not want your loved one to slip and fall on underfoot objects or get sick because the place is not properly sanitized. Remember, many elderly find that their immune systems are just not what they used to be and a small cold could turn dangerous in no time at all. Also, find out if they handle all of the cleaning inside of the resident's rooms or if this is something that your loved one will need to tend to on their own. If your loved one is not capable of cleaning their own room, be sure to communicate that to the housing facility.

Their Willingness to Answer a Lot of Questions

You will want to sit down and write up a list of questions. Ask if they hold activities for the residents, if they encourage exercise, how emergencies are handled, and what their Better Business Bureau rating is. Basically, ask anything you can think of to get as much information as possible. You gain a lot of knowledge this way, and you will be able to judge a lot by their willingness, or lack of willingness, to answer all of your questions. Most high-quality senior housing places will encourage the family to be involved so they know what is going on with the resident.

Talk with friends and co-workers to see if they have any suggestions for you and start your search soon. Call around and set up appointments for tours. You want to be able to compare a few different places before settling on any particular one. This way, you can find the facility that will work the best for your loved one.

Protecting Your Elderly Loved One

Recently, my mom took my grandmother to her physician for a regular check-up. During this visit, the doctor discovered my grandmother had a cracked bone in her foot. Due to my grandmother’s dementia, she didn’t know if she had fallen or dropped something on her foot. My family and I decided my grandmother shouldn’t live on her own anymore. Do you desperately desire to protect an elderly loved one from harm? If he or she is currently living alone, consider placing your loved one in a nursing home or an assisted living facility. By making this move, you won’t have to worry anymore about the possibility of your relative falling with no one to help him or her. On this blog, I hope you will discover the numerous benefits of moving a senior loved one into a nursing home or assisted living facility. Enjoy!
